"A lobster is a mushy animal that lives inside of a rigid shell. As it grows, the shell becomes confining and the lobster feels a lot of pressure. It goes under a rock, cast off its shell and grows a new one. Eventually, that shell becomes too small and the lobster starts over. The stimulus for the lobster to grow is that it feels uncomfortable."

The company had been running rehearsals all week in the theater and our production team had been working around the clock to build the Library. We were ready to go. There was a fantastic buzz that filled the theater as people started taking their seats.

The lights dimmed and the crowd went silent as we took the stage. What followed was a whirlwind of laughter, tears, anger, joy and passion. All of these feelings culminated in our finale, a call to action to love one another more selflessly. Then the music cut out 3/4 of the way through the performance.

The months of work, however, had created a bond in the dancers that a hiccup like this couldn't shake. On cue, everyone began moving in unison, breathing together to create the melody that would take us to the end of the piece. In that moment, the love and trust we built with each other became palpable to the audience. When the lights faded to black, they stood up; not just for the dancing but because 22 young people just demonstrated that when you put aside the fear, ego, pride, and everything else that drives us apart, you can create something powerful enough to bring us together.
