As an art form, dance reflects the culture it comes from. It either supports or opposes the status quo and plays a vital role in spreading those ideas. Audiences flock to theaters looking to be challenged and inspired. Artists have the privilege to provide that experience. However, dance is losing it’s effectiveness.
We have traded doing what matters for doing what sells. We don't hold each other accountable because speaking up can cost you an opportunity. Our impact decreases with every dancer willing to accept ego and abuse in exchange for stage time. This is the new norm and it's bulls**t. By doing nothing, we are a part of the problem.
We started this project as a way to take some responsibility: to our craft, to each other and to the audience. We do it by putting love first. It is a small contribution to the larger body of artists raising the bar, speaking out, and making a difference.
